Yves Saint Laurent
**1999 Batch - SANOFI First formula!
OPIUM POUR HOMME | for men | Eau de toilette
100 ml. / 3.3 fl. oz. | NEW | +Original packaging!
1990's Classic / Retro / Vaulted / Vintage formula!
Grail deep vintage SANOFI launch era formula!
Amplified star anise & tolu balsam.
**1999 Batch # 93281 ('9'= 1999)
**Please note:
Vintage Yves Saint Laurent batch codes result in either in no results *OR* the code repeats every 10 years; resulting in a current year as it is a 10 year repeating batch code.
These discrepancies occur when searching all vintage YSL batches.
I've been selling vintage YSL perfumes for over a decade and the SANOFI BEAUTE INC production confirms a 1993-1999 timeline. Since YSL Opium for men launched in 1995 - the absolute earliest Opiums were produced under Sanofi under YSL's 'French era' - when USA producer Parfums corp. handed over production to Sanofi during the economic depression of the early 1990's.
The first number in a vintage YSL batch confirms the last number of that decade,
in this case a Sanofi batch starting in '9' = 199'9'.
Additional to that; short ingredients on the packaging (Mandated to list long ingredients in 2005) & the *absent* PAO on bottom of product sticker (Period after O symbol mandated on cosmetics in 2005) confirms this is listing to be pre-2005.
And of course what confirms this to be vintage is the richer potent unapologetic anise tolu balsam scent throw! The fragrance was thinned out with less oriental notes later in its production.
This is the holy grail vintage YSL Opium Pour Homme EDT formula pre-IFRA mandates.
Please email me if you had more questions about my dating process.

I'm proud to present BACK to my shop,
The OG late 1990's - deep vintage - short ingredient - pre IFRA regulations - SANOFI BEAUTE INC - oakmoss loaded - discontinued formula.
Yves Saint Laurent Opium Pour Homme Eau de Toilette!
This holy grail old-school oriental barbershop scent is a blast from the 1990's past.
If you know - you know!
A masterly crafted spiced aromatic woody sweet note listing of;
Bergamot, lemon, black currant, star anise, Sichuan pepper, galangal (ginger), Atlas cedar, tolu balsam, & bourbon vanilla.
Exotic fruits, unique spices, blonde woods, resinous balsam, and vanilla built upon a classic barbershop backbone. A truly unique and ultra elegant fragrance for men.
A fragrance now heavily reformulated in its modern formulas.
Listing features the first formula of YSL Opium Pour Homme which has an amplified anise spice & resinous tolu balsam note; giving the vintage formula an amplified warmer, richer, spicier, fruity-floral scent throw. The syrupy camphoric accords make the fragrance stronger in character. The darker spiced balsam note in the original formula balances out the clean soapy barbershop backbone making it smell classic but also unique and exotic.
Modern formulas of Opium Pour Homme are far more simplistic, fresh, & casual; staying with the bright citrus theme while being loaded in synthetics resulting in less complexity, less depth, less edge, less performance, and an overall linear fragrance experience.
Even if Yves Saint Laurent was to bring this original formula back, IFRA would make sure it wouldn't be the same. IFRA regulations are to blame for such low quality modern fragrances, and discontinuations of classics. These mandates swept though designer brands slowly in early 2010's then faster and more intensely toward the end of that decade limiting natural ingredients that are deemed irritants, especially oakmoss.
All these IFRA mandates and budget cuts results in modern YSL fragrances that are less versatile, not as elegant, and thinned out in recent formulations. Seeing as designer prices continue to rise as quality decreases, it's becoming pointless investing into them. You are much better off investing into superior vintage formulas from trusted vintage fragrance shops such as mine.
Brands know many customers are dissatisfied with recent formulas, yet the materials from the vintage formulas are just not possible to find anymore, are banned by IFRA, OR are just too expensive for the brand to resource. We now are in modern days where designer fragrances are no longer held to the same high standards. Due to the lack of high standards in modern perfumes, customers are now embracing vintage formulas. Brands know this but won't do much about it other than pretend there isn't a difference in formulas.
This fruity aromatic spiced woody oriental DNA from the prestigious brand of Yves Saint Laurent is in the uttermost exquisite original quality prior to harsh IFRA regulations, ingredient mandates, endangered ingredient resourcing, and budget cuts. An iconic Yves Saint Laurent formula that is now completely discontinued and ultra rare.
Yves Saint Laurent's classic 1990's old school barbershop oriental fragrance is praised for taking the classic barbershop backbone while adding unique notes to create a one of a kind experience. That playful black currant, star anise, and resinous tolu balsam with that classic soapy shaving foam touch. This is TOP of the pyramid when it comes to vintage oriental barbershop fragrances.
This deep vintage macerated, pre-IFRA regulated listing impressively has the richness & performance of a modern day EDT Intense / EDP. This vintage fragrance exemplifies a vintage time capsule in more ways than one. A Jacques Cavallier-Belletrud masterpiece in its original envisioned artistic expression. A pre-IFRA formula that is regulation free & in the artists original vision with the best quality materials strength & performance.
Whether this be different standards to what an 'EDT' was back in the day or the heavier natural ingredients - either way - what a concoction! Once you go from smelling modern formulas to smelling this formula there is a complete understanding as to why this is one of the best selling men's fragrances from the brand of Yves Saint Laurent.
Fresh, warm, and cozy - just the right amount of spice - just in time for autumn!
The fragrance featured an A-tier ultra luxurious quality in its original formula, with freedom or artistic expression, no mandates, and no budget cuts; leading to a fragrance deemed one of the best classically masculine male colognes.
An absolutely stunning high class fragrance for night-time, special occasions, or colder weather.
A rich black currant, star anise, tolu balsam, vanilla BEAUTY.
6-8-10 hour + silage & strength!

Featured in this guardian listing is the nostalgic vintage Opium Pour Homme Eau de Toilette!
The mystique of this 31 year old fragrance still mystifies the fragrance community.
The nostalgia it brings to many is just unmatched. It is one of those classic masculine fragrances that will never be forgotten.
History was made in the mid 1990's when Yves Saint Laurent brought in master perfumer Jacques Cavallier-Belletrud to make what is known as one the most unique barbershop oriental fragrances for men.
Originally a self titled women's fragrance line for over 30 years,
Yves Saint Laurent sought out to create a male fragrance in the line up that was just as dynamic, addictive, and daring. They did it in the 1970's for women, now it was the men's turn with Opium Pour Homme.
When new Opium fragrance for men was released by this top tier perfumery brand, it intrigued men in the 1990's due to its mass advertising campaign. and a successful hit as men were looking for something new at the time.
A masterly crafted spiced aromatic woody sweet note listing of;
Bergamot, lemon, black currant, star anise, Sichuan pepper, galangal (ginger), Atlas cedar, tolu balsam, & bourbon vanilla.
Exotic fruits, unique spices, blonde woods, resinous balsam, and vanilla built upon a classic barbershop backbone. A truly unique and ultra elegant fragrance for men.
Unfortunately,
Yves Saint Laurent Opium Pour Homme Eau de toilette was reformulated due to IFRA regulations, ingredient resourcing, and overall budget cuts done by the new production company.
Now the fragrance is thinned out and weak and lacks the quality of vintage formulations. All newer formulas of designer colognes are flat, weak, with no traces of the notes from the original.
First formula of Opium contained an amplified green black currant note, richer anise spice, and more resinous tolu balsam not found in the modern formula. These are the notes that made the fragrance so niche and unique.
The vintage formula was a potent, fruity, spicy, woody, masculine, and luxurious barbershop built scent with high levels of naturals - something Yves Saint Laurent is not able to make this now with IFRA regulations, endangered ingredient resourcing, production company shifts, budget cuts, and due to an overall a lower expected standard of perfumes made in the modern age.
It's simply impossible to make a deeper rich classy men's fragrance with synthetic ingredients in the base - & all designer brands continue to prove this by releasing their modern formulas.
Fortunately,
At Guardian of the Fragrances, it is my mission to 'undo' all that, take you back into past by offering fragrances from their golden eras, & most of all offer passion & transparency in everything I do.
With me, you get a selection of unalerted, well preserved, authentic, relics from the past in their original intended vision of quality, & strength.
With my passion in the art of perfumery, natural based ingredients, & a distain for all organizational overreach regulation & mandates; I make it my passion & joy to bring well preserved, authentic, & superior collectible formulas to my shop to share with the world.
With that said, I bring you vintage Opium Pour Homme Eau de toilette
This is truly a must have collectible & store staple with Guardian of the Fragrances & I am proud to present it to my store.

THE TRUTH ABOUT BATCH WEBSITES - THEY GAS LIGHT YOU:
Vintage fragrances are well known to give year errors on batch code sites.
Vintage batch codes either populate no result at all OR repeat every 8-10 years giving an incorrect timeline.
As a Revenue protection investigator & quality appraiser for 15 years; product quirks such as presentation features, distributer history, zip codes, formula color, symbolism, ingredients, and the scent itself allow for accurate transparency in dating a product - far more accurately than a batch site.
Vintage formula grade:
A+++
Number of ingredients: 8 (+ colorants) (Seen on vintage box)
Designer brand Tier: Premium / High end designer brand; luxury niche tier / private collection quality in their deep vintage formulas when fragrances were held to even higher luxury standards.
Maceration time: 27 years! Incredible.
STAND out nuances: An exotic blend of Bergamot, lemon, black currant, star anise, Sichuan pepper, galangal (ginger), Atlas cedar, tolu balsam, & bourbon vanilla that doesn't quit! Stunning! Vintage increases the density in the spices & resins. That spicy blackcurrant anise vanilla just simmers for hours.
Performs as / concentration rating: A modern day EDT Intense / EDP

(COLLECTOR CONSULTATION - FINAL THOUGHTS)
This discontinued 1999 first formula Yves Saint Laurent Opium Pour Homme just keeps getting more rare as we now move closer to the 2030's & into a generation of more severe IFRA regulations.
Mix that with 27 year maceration time & it's virtually impossible to be able to make this formula again.
Now dare I say it's one of a kind.
These just keep getting more rare especially SANOFI BEAUTE INC first formula from the 1990's!
Allow me to emphasize how rare this formula is now & will be even more so in the future.
Highly sought after collectible!
Just holding this & observing it you feel its vintage charms.
1999 listing is in excellent condition condition with vintage charms so it is a time capsule from 27 years ago.
Great collector's piece!
This is the only formula out there to contain a richer black currant, anise spice, and tolu balsam scent throw.
A proper presentation of the fruity, spicy, resinous, classy barbershop fragrance.
3 decades of maceration pre-IFRA regulations with Yves Saint Laurent quality results in a performance that resembles a modern EDT Intense / EDP. This in the end means less applications - & a longer life of this precious listing - especially if only prioritized for special occasions!
Literally 2-3 applications & you're good. Concentrated macerated vintage formula means less applications,
this 100 ml. / 3.3 fl. oz. will last you forever!
This fragrance is MODERN with its sweet spice nuances yet CLASSIC and old school with touches of class and modesty. Stand out in a crowd wearing something uniquely modern yet incredibly classy and elegant.
Decent price for a collector wanting to own this iconic original well preserved first formula from the high tier brand of Yves Saint Laurent. Grab it while prices are modest - I see this reaching prestige pricing very soon.

✓ One-category shop
I’m not selling a mess of random various thrift items that I know nothing about. At Guardian of the Fragrances; you are shopping at a niche shop that specializes solely on discontinued perfumery formulations. ‘One category shops’ provide customers with a unique shopping experience that is backed with knowledge & experience within that category. By selling one category items; it shows I have a deep passion in what I am selling. Buying from fine-tuned one category shops makes all the difference & in result a rewarding shopping experience. That seller who has listed some sneakers, baseball cards, hoodies, & that cologne you want - he may know its authentic & well preserved, OR he may not.
✓ Revenue protection process
With over a decade of professional Revenue Protection expertise investigating fraud & theft for my state of WI utility provider; all vintage fragrances in my shop are expertly authenticated. Examples of the process include batch searches, listing dating, differentiating formula differences, production quirk studies, hardware chks, product & cap weigh-ins, how long the performance lasts & the quality of that experience, ect. Anything that falls into my hands that doesn't pass this process never reaches my shop.
✓ Quality appraisal process
I am college board certified in the state of WI in Sales & Design with over 20+ years of professional experience in appraising personal property & products. At Guardian of the Fragrances; rest assured I am expertly skilled in determining whether your vintage formula has been well preserved. I value revenue protection process & quality appraisal in my shop to gain customer trust & I am on a mission to not disappoint you.
✓ Mutual perfumery hobbyist & collector
I myself am a vintage fragrance hobbyist & collector. In fact, many listings come from my own personal collection after years of collecting back-up products as a hobby. As a hobbyist myself, I know exactly what my shoppers are looking for & what is sorely lacking in this sector. Studying & shopping for rare fragrances for my own collection has taught me our population is no where close to being fragrance experts. It's an art only a small population sees, and an exotic language only a few speaks. You even go on a forum discussion with hobbyist's & there's more questions than answers. The community needs my help. At Guardian of the Fragrances - I have those answers for you. I am here to give you common-sense truths that Designer brands & retails hold back from us. In fact it was poor aloof information provided to the public about fragrances that gave me the drive to launch my business in the first place.
Why should you spend SO much on a fragrance?
(I know you are pondering this if you are new to all this).
✅UNLOCKS STORED MEMORIES IN THE BRAINS HIPPOCAMPUS
Fragrances have a fingerprint. The brain is so intelligently designed - that it stores a fragrance DNA's composition precisely to the very last ingredient utilized at that time. Smell a modern formula & see what happens - your brain gets low key upset.
Only that special formula composed 10-20-30-40 years ago is the key to unlock vivid feelings of nostalgia.
✅BETTER QUALITY, INGREDIENTS, PERFORMANCE, & CREATIVITY
Made in times prior to culture regulations, production politics, corporate greed, & making man made chemicals for profit; you get the authentic formula(s) the perfumery artist(s) intended from that time resulting in more naturals, less synthetic/cheap aroma chemicals, richer compositions, bolder presence, more layers/less linear, & made in times where smoking was indoors- you get NUCLEAR performance.
✅SMELL BETTER & OR HIGHER QUALITY THEN OTHER MEN AROUND YOU.
In a mass society unaware of vintage fragrances - you will absolutely without a doubt outshine whatever they are wearing. Gain respect, stand out, be the most attractive smelling in the room. In general this is what makes the male gender so enthralled with colognes but vintage amplifies this to the next level. Stop endless influencer searches seeing if something modern performs - just buy vintage.
✅INVEST MORE IN VINTAGE TO SPEND LESS OVER TIME ON MODERN
Vintage fragrances are stronger & need less applications due to concentration. It's not a coincidence they are removing oils in colognes nowadays - they don't want us to know how weakened they are. Many collectors go niche to escape low quality fragrances when designer vintage is their solution. Beautiful mass pleasing DNA's in the best quality & strength possible. The best way to go forward in perfumery is to go backwards.
If you buy a vintage - a product that would have lasted you a year is now lasting you over 2+ years. Think about it- you are going from essentially a modern day EDC (Modern edt) to a powerful parfum strength niche smelling formula. Once you go vintage it's illogical to go back.
✅VINTAGE FRAGRANCES ARE AN INVESTMENT THAT *INCREASE* IN VALUE
Due to the mass, devoted, & awakening population of the vintage fragrance community; vintage fragrances are a collectible commodity matching similar value in precious paintings, antiques, jewelry, gemstones, diamonds, & gold! Vintage fragrances are an investment, this listing will be MORE in 2-5-10-15 years. This is my favorite thing about being a collector; my purchase investments lack buyers remorse on as I am buying an investment for the future/ & or discreet savings to liquidate as needed. It's as easy to trade fragrances for cash as it is to liquidate your cash for gold.
✅OVERALL ENHANCEMENT OF THE ATTRIBUTES BELOW VS BUYING MODERN FORMULAS
✓Positive mood enhancer
✓Confidence booster
✓Alluring attractiveness
✓Triggers memories
✓Aromatherapy
✓Makes you more attractive
✓Enduring impact
✓Describes your personality
✓Attract other people
(Reformulation talk...)
Unfortunately,
In a modern era's effort to make the small allergen pool of the population safe for the bigger masses
(essentially a 'Safe than sorry' approach for everyone);
Harsh fragrance regulations came into effect within the last 20 years in the EU (United Nations) where nearly all fragrances are still composed.
The SCCS (Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety), IFRA (International Fragrance Association) & the ECHA (European Chemicals Agency) came together together to ban many precious naturals, & unique aroma chemicals due to potential irritant concerns in a small pool of the population.
Every year it seems another ingredient is banned as these chemical giants are auditing & banning aroma materials for simply having slight reactions due to sensitivities. To ban something from a total population when said ingredient reacts negatively to only a small group of that population is an unnecessary overreach.
To play nice & to still get credibility for selling 'Safe' fragrances; all Designer perfumery brands have submitted to these giants for EU support of their product(s).
Between 2010-2022;
The EU has now banned over 2,000 ingredients in the beauty & fragrance business.
This massive ingredient ban in beauty products is more than any other world region in history!
In comparison, the United States has banned only 17 ingredients from beauty products made in the USA.
Unfortunately for fragrance enthusiasts, a VERY small pct of designers make their fragrances in America.
By 2030; the EEB (European Environmental Bureau) anticipates over 5,000-7,000 ingredients to be banned in total.
Rules, reformulations, synthetic ingredients, cost-cutting, & keeping up with modern scent trends have weakened performance of modern favorites from the past. This is not a theory or paranoia, this is becoming more evident in the fragrance community since the rise of fragrance communities & fragrance Vloggers coming together to compare their findings.
Since this confirmation of industries now releasing overly regulated, synthetic, & weakened modern formulas of classic fragrances, beloved vintage fragrance formulas are now highly sought after by collectors or simply average shoppers that just want to reunite with their signature fragrance in its original and true form.
Many are so accustomed to newer compositions they have no idea what they are not experiencing.
Vintage EDT formulas are well known to perform with higher concentrations equal to a modern Eau de Parfum or Parfum. Newer formulations of the modern age are said to perform somewhere between an Eau de cologne & Eau de toilette with lower quality, more synthetics, & average performance.
DET Vs. DPG:
A chemist in Germany did a gas chromatogram composition on a vintage fragrance & it's modern day formula.
It was found that companies utilized a solvent Diethyl Phthalate (DET) on the vintage formula; which was known to have a stronger bonding fixative effect on what it touches. Modern day formulas now have Dipropylene Glycol (DPG).
DPG is commonly utilized in LIGHTLY fragrance'd shampoos while DET on the other hand is still in potent home fragrances. Home fragrance companies don't utilize DPG as the fragrance would immediately leave the base!
Makes you think - "Why would I spend 100 dollars on a fragrance with DPG & no DET?"
2010's Oakmoss ban:
By far one of the most controversial & damaging IFRA regulations was the ban of natural Oakmoss.
This popular natural ingredient has been in every legendary cologne for the past 50 years. All of those classics are now utilized with weaker synthetics.
Since Oakmoss is a base note & has lasting fixative effects, modern fragrances now don't perform well without it.
2022 Lilial ban:
& if you thought your top / mid notes were safe. You're wrong.
In 2021, The Scientific committee on consumer safety (SCCS) & the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) banned the note of lilial due to sensitive reactions. (That's it?). They simply stated "It may sometimes act as an allergen."
Lilial was a common note in modern perfumery.
With Lilial being a synthetic aromatic soapy aldehyde; it gave it's fragrance a sweet yet refreshing intense floral green odor. No other aroma chemical has yet to produce the same effects.
Fragrance shelf-life lies:
One of the biggest gaslighting scams is the myth that fragrances naturally 'Expire/go bad' due to time alone.
Fragrances are not your local produce guys, they are a chemist composition of naturals and fragrant chemical aromas that contain preservatives. That chemist recipe is THEN preserved in a pct average of 80 pct ALCOHOL. This 80 pct alcohol is combined with 10 pct aroma chemicals & 10 pct naturals. To assume 10 pct natural ingredients expire in a whopping 80 pct alcohol composition is a HUGE stretch.
Made with similar strategies, fragrances should instead be compared to vintage wine. Fragrances in fact get better with age from the process of maceration; when naturals soak for extended periods of time making the formula blend and smell more matured for an enhanced, smoother, more complex, & longer lasting scent.
Fragrances are not fresh hand made cosmetics with no preservatives sensitive to time - quite the opposite!
Fragrances were even recovered from the 1912 Titanic wreck - with no sins of going bad!
A perfumery salesman perished in the wreck resulting in his briefcase of fragrances found on the BOTTOM of the ocean preserved for over 100 years. In an artifact examination room amongst the muck & tragedy,
The recovered perfumery was presented to the room & by surprise brought the room to LIFE again, aromas of beautiful fruits, florals, resins, & woods sourced from so long ago.
The experience was so powerful to the scientist- it made a grown man cry.
Fragrances may be poorly stored...but don't go bad from just the passing of time.
I guess any myth will be claimed for these fragrance industries that want you coming in to buy their modern products.
The modern recipe / The modern day scent:
Modern fragrances just aren't good you guys, whether that be a brand new scent or a reformulation of a classic.
Anything modern follows the same pattern; synthetic fruity tops to lock you in, aromatic regulated molecules to give you general masculinity, then a base gob-smacked with scratchy ambroxan / synthetic cloying sweetness to ultimately distract you so don't notice how ridiculous the entire composition smells.
It's truly depressing what they release nowadays.
You might as well wear your home cleaner.
fortunately,
In every generation...
...A guardian is born.
A guardian to make the world a better place.
Now, our memories are under siege.
You may wonder..."What is happening to my signature fragrance, & why?"
"Is it all in my head?"...It's not.
Designer brands are gaslighting you.
Retail associates are lying to you.
They don't want you to know about me...
the Guardian of the Fragrances.
Vintage formulas taking asylum & preserved under my guardianship.
The awakening is growing, don't be excluded.
