At Guardian of the Fragrances...

 I do one role better than anywhere else in the world;
Supply a specialized selection of trusted, authentic, properly stored, & well preserved vintage fragrance formulas to add to your personal grooming arsenal & upgrade your quality of life.
Superior formulas prior to European / IFRA regulation bans on perfumery ingredients resulting in higher quality, richer, longer lasting, & more natural smelling compositions.

My passionately ran one-person owned & operated business was founded by a fellow fragrance collector that has grown tired of modern classic fragrance formulas that have become overly regulated, reformulated, thinned, watered down, & synthetic - resulting in modern designer houses saturating the industry with the only 'DNA' left & not banned by Europe - the smell of a vanilla cupcake ambroxan candle (lol) - annihilating diversity & options in the industry *unless* you want a classic gutted formula.
Once I realized the best way to 'go forwards' in perfumery is to 'go backwards'  - one notable frustration I had was there was not one reliable source to purchase them all.
So I became one!

Nothing ignites my passion & combines my diverse set of skills as much as selling vintage fragrances to our community.
My diverse set of skilled interests in cosmetic chemistry, cosmetic production mandates, olfactory memory / brain science, plants & naturals, holistic healing, aromatherapy, designer house history, sociology trends in art, beauty, grooming, & fashion - along with my 10-year+ background in revenue protection investigations / fraud protection - & a college degree in merchandising sales & design; results in a specialized expertise & niche experience. It is because of the complicated set of skills it takes to do what I do that I also daringly proclaim 'Vintage designer is the new niche." It is my mission & given talent to research, locate, inspect, quality control, & supply vintage fragrance formulas with enthusiasm & precision to bring you something the industry is telling you its now impossible to have.

My ending goal is to reintroduce vintage fragrances to a wider audience & restore a higher quality of life to as many as I can when perfumes were only held at the highest standards in decades past. The giants can take away almost everything from you - BUT as long as I am around - they can not take away your right to own & smell superior vintage perfumes. This is why I sell *myself* in my business name before my products - I am fighting for you & guarding these formulas for as long as I can stand. I am YOUR fragrance guardian that is the guardian of THEE fragrances! I am doing what I love to do - my business & my inventory is here to stay.

By continuing to listen to my glowing customer reviews left after receiving their specialized curated orders, I stay assured this is where I am meant to be. I am proud to deliver a service & inventory that is unmatched across the vintage fragrance resale industry.

House of KARL LAGERFELD
LAGERFELD 'CLASSIC' COLOGNE for men | Spray
HUGE 120 ml. / 4 fl. oz. bottle | FULL | No original packaging
1970's Classic / Retro / Vaulted / Vintage formula!
46 year maturation = advanced maceration!
Stronger, richer, and scientifically blended to perfection by time.
*Crystals / gemstones in listing are for creative visual display purposes only, you will only receive everything mentioned above.

**Deep vintage PINK INKED Batch # 0HA

**Please note:
Like almost vintage Karl Lagerfeld fragrances; batch codes are headache.
There are all applied in different ways, some near impossible to find, aren't there at all - and worst of all don't work anyways on batch run sites...OR be a 10 year repeating batch.

I almost deemed this listing a batchless bottle until at the last minute I caught the subtle pink inked code "0HA" on the bottom of the bottle only by looking at it reversed through peering down at the bottle (See image 3). Its so hard to view it let alone photograph it but you can see the code reversed as " AH0 " upside down - if was able to read properly right side up would have read as batch " 0HA ".

Anyways - as expected the code didn't work. However I was still easily able to date the bottle; per the first # on vintage Karl Lagerfeld perfumes confirms the end of the batch year ( '0' = 198'0'). With my experience in the history of cosmetic safety symbolism mandates; I place this bottle no later than 1980 per Bottle details / design / font style, production company Betchco, atomizer style, scent itself rich in musky oakmoss, as well as the missing POA (Period after opening symbol) mandated on cosmetic stickers in 2005.

These bottles are as vintage as you can get with 'Lagerfeld Classic'. Even safe from pre soft oakmoss limitations in the early 1990's. The basenotes in this is POTENT musky, animalic, and oakmossy. Contrasted alongside the amber vanilla is just a stunning contrast that can only be pulled off from bottles from this era.
100% authentic, well preserved, & properly dated. Satisfaction guaranteed or your money back!

Send me an email if you have more questions about my dating process.
Thanks guardian followers!

I'm proud to present BACK to my shop,

The OG launch era - first formula - Bethco era - short ingredient - PRE- 'Gotham font' - 'Cologne spray naturel' (Now known as 'Lagerfeld Classic' - pre IFRA regulation - early 80's - Karl Lagerfeld Cologne spray! The holy grail and original KING of amber-vanilla-oakmoss colognes in its nostalgic original formula! If you know, you know!

This is the sweet clubbing gourmand of the disco era. Absolutely NOTHING could beat Karl Lagerfed Cologne for a retro night on the town. Zippy aldehydic energetic lemon-orange, powdery orris root & tobacco, creamy floral-sandalwood, an alluring fluorescent orange amber-vanilla-tonka bean combo that simmers into a green ultra masculine musky oakmossy base. A warm electrifying, comforting, sexy, masculine, attention getting fragrance from beginning to end.

The trends back in the day are fun to explore & this fragrance is no exception. Vintage bottles are an utter masterpiece in their original envisioned artistic expression. A pre-IFRA formula that is regulation free & in the artists full original vision with the best quality materials available at the time.

An iconic DNA now heavily gutted & made more synthetic - making vintage bottles highly sought after by collectors. Modern iterations have lost all integrity due to IFRA regulations, budget set backs, & to steer focus toward newer releases. In combination with harsh IFRA demands the last 30 years, companies were forced to stop using naturals, & oakmoss fixatives.

The original Karl Lagerfeld 'Classic' cologne was well known being an extravagant beast and praised for its extended longevity with modern bottles similar to a modern 'EDC' - one of the weakest concentrations out there. This performance is most likely due to the high concentrations of authentic oakmoss that was originall in the fragrance base. After IFRA regulations in the early 90s & 2010s - eventually this particular fragrance DNA was never able to recover with later reformulations.

These 1980s bottles are highly sought after as they are the the only KL fragrances in existence to contain such true unregulated concentrations of oakmoss. Seeing as this is a 1980 bottle - it is even free from the 'soft oakmoss mandate' that regulated max concentrations to 0.6% in 1991. This early 80's bottle is free from virtually all regulations via it being pre- Cologne mass market boom.

This perfumery is an encapsulated representation of a vintage time capsule in more ways than one.

This deep vintage, pre-IFRA regulated listing is richer with natural ingredients & charms.

Once you go from smelling modern batches/ modern 'green' scents to smelling this formula there is a complete understanding as to why this men's cologne is still being hunted down to add to vintage collections.

A beautiful rich warm aldehydic-orange, amber-vanilla, tobacco-woods, & musky-mossy greens that it can be worn appropriately into the deep colder months.
This was the 70s disco 'gourmand' that started it all!

This is a rich niche quality amber vanilla & musky oakmoss BEAST.
10-12-18 hour+ strength & performance!

(ALL ABOUT KL LAGERFELD CLASSIC COLOGNE)

Wardrobe category is!;
Matching white & black pant suit / slim fit dinner jacket combo.
Wide lapels & padded shoulders mandatory to nab a babe in sequins!

Up for sale is the nostalgic vintage KARL LAGERFELD - LAGERFELD COLOGNE.
Now modernly known as 'Lagerfeld Classic'.

The ORIGINAL late 70's vanilla beast club banger!

The mystique of this 48 year old fragrance still mystifies the fragrance community.
The nostalgia it brings to many is just one of those classic masculine fragrances that will never be forgotten from the disco era.

Nothing on the shelves today compares to the vintage formulation; no flankers, inspired scents, or even the modern day version compares. Unfortunately due to IFRA regulations on oakmoss, cost cutting and other various factors - what we get today is a shadow of its former self.

History was made in the late 1970's when this fragrance was composed by Ron Winnegrad.
Something undeniable and astonishing about this fragrance is the incredible *nod* it makes to modern fragrances with its alluring gourmand facets mingled into its musky green personality.

It's like catching a time traveler from 2026 in a 1970s disco photo - something brings you into the past yet makes you question how the past knew about modern trends all at the same time.

Zippy aldehydic bright energetic lemon-orange, powdery orris root-tobacco, creamy floral-sandalwood, an alluring seductive fluorescent orange amber-vanilla-tonka bean combo that simmers over a base of green ultra masculine musky oakmoss.
electrifying, comforting, warm, sexy, ultra masculine fragrance from beginning to end.
Despite it being a nod to modern fragrances - modern cannot even attempt to compose something like this.

Despite modern houses using the exact Lagerfed playbook from the 1970s, not all playful seductive masculine beasts are alike.
Instead of using sexy oakmoss naturals, modern design houses just take cheapened synthetic citrus molecules, mingle it with vanilla and sit it over a loud ambroxan base then demand we say thank you.

NO-thank you.
I will take vintage Karl Lagerfeld 'Cologne Spray'
I guardian knight this as the ORIGINAL club banger that started it all!

Unfortunately,

They don't make them like they used to.

What people don't realize is how superior the original formulation was & how gutted the modern iterations are.

The ORIGINAL formulation of 'Lagerfeld Classic' was far more complex in the original formulation due to little to no IFRA regulations. This results in a richer, more dynamic, thicker, less linear, & longer lasting fragrance. This formula is unlike anything being sold today. Karl Lagerfeld classic was particularly known for its high oakmoss content that was obliterated after regulations. Now the fragrance DNA has collapsed upon itself and can no longer stand up. Lagerfed has tried to keep this one going but can no longer pull off the magic of the original formula with the ingredient bans. You simply cannot replicate a deeper heavy oakmoss nuance with synthetic ingredients - and all designer brands continue to prove this by releasing their horrible modern formulas.

Fortunately,

At Guardian of the Fragrances, it is my mission to 'undo' all that, take you back into past by offering fragrances from their golden eras, & most of all offer passion & transparency in everything I do.

With me, you get a selection of unalerted, well preserved, authentic, relics from the past in their original intended vision of quality, & strength.

With my passion in the art of perfumery, natural based ingredients, & a distain for all organizational overreach regulation & mandates; I make it my passion & joy to bring well preserved, authentic, & superior collectible formulas to my shop to share with the world.

With that said I bring you vintage karl Lagerfeld 'Classic Cologne'

This is truly a must have collectible & store staple with Gurardian of the Fragrances & I am proud to present it to my store.

(SPECIFIC LISTING DETAILS - WHAT YOU ARE BUYING)

Formula: First formula
Batch code : Pink inked batch code " 0HA "
Batch year / 'era' : 1980 Bethco era "0" in "0HA" = 198"0"
Does the batch work on modern batch sites?: No - see below.
Identifiers to date the bottle: Production company Bethco, owning & selling multiple bottles of this formula & vintage fragrances in general under Bethco, 10 year repeating 'pink inked' batch code (The first # in the Bethco batch determines the last # in the year), bottle details, bottle design, font style (PRE-Gotham font), fragrance name 'Cologne spray naturel' (Now known as 'Lagerfeld Classic'), fragrance called a COLOGNE (now named an Eau de toilette), atomizer style, the bottom sticker *missing* the 'POA' symbol (Period after opening) mandated on cosmetics in 2005, & of course the pre-regulated musky oakmoss base in the scent places this in 1980 and no later.
I research extensively spending days-months-years of personal research as a vintage perfume hobbyist & passionate fragrance seller only to bring you nothing but accurate details & the most helpful information to make your final purchase.
Send me an email if you have additional questions about my dating process.

THE TRUTH ABOUT BATCH RUN WEBSITES - THEY GAS LIGHT YOU:
Vintage fragrances are well known to give errors on batch code sites to place the year. Vintage batch codes are either missing, will commonly not work on batch check websites, OR repeat every 8-10 years and mislabel the timeline.
As a counterfeit investigator & quality appraiser for 10 years in my career of Revenue Protection; these quirks are what drew me to research bottles by means bottle features, distributer history, zip codes, juice color, overall label information, and lastly the scent itself for accurate transparency - at least far more accurate than a shifty batch site.

Vintage juice condition grade:
A+++
Designer Perfumery House Tier: Mid-tier designer (Leaning into a higher tier category in its vintage formulas)
Maceration time: 46 years! Incredible. That aldehydic warm orange ambery vanilla musk & high concentrations of oakmoss just simmers on the skin for hours and hours.
Performs as / concentration rating: A modern day EDP! Do not be distracted by the 'COLOGNE' description - simply a buzz word at the time to describe a masculine fragrance.
Authenticity?: 100% authentic.
Properly stored?: Yes
Well preserved?: Yes
Sour notes?: No
(Besides its purposeful aldehydes - Note: notes have not soured by age)
Life of the fragrance?: 10-12-18 hour + strength/ silage.

Why this formula?:
-Formula now discontinued, & no longer available.
-Rich in naturals, quality, & better base fixatives prior to European IFRA bans.
- Performance relative to a modern EDP concentration - concentrated ml. means less sprays.
-Spent 46 years macerating - allowing its ingredients to blend & mature for an enhanced, smoother, more complex, & longer lasting scent.

Vintage bottle condition grade:
A-
Bottle age: 46 years
Full bottle: Yes! Filled to the brim.
Cosmetic flaws on bottle: Cap on the bottle has some light dings at the top since its SO tall with the cap, as well as some general brush marks on the cap, other wise entire presentation MINT. The decorative 'ring' above the cap is even still attached! Many break this off stubbornly over the years so they don't take up shelf space. This bottle is shockingly mint despite its 4.5 decades age - see images for full transparency.
Atomizer & Cap condition: Atomizer excellent - no orange dried juice residue seen on other vintage bottles. Decorative ring on top of cap has slight dings/ chip wear at top - see photos.
Bottom bottle sticker & batch code: Sticker mint, Batch code legible if carefully inspected - see photos.
Signs of atomizer leaking: None
Glass chips: None
Scuffs: None
Cracks: None

Missing: Original box/ packaging, a few sprays to test, & a good home :)

PLEASE NOTE:
-Juice properly tested for well preservation & authenticity.
-HUGE 120 ml. / 4 fl. oz. bottle - Filled to top as shown & tested once for quality assurance.
-Batch originally hard to view but determined to read as " 0HA " in pink ink UNDER the sticker. Batch does not work on batch run sites and confirmed to be a 1980 batch era per my expert skip tracing process. See above for more details that date the bottle.
- Listing does ***NOT*** come with original packaging. Will pack like a professional mover to prevent damage.
-Listing is tested, 100% authentic, properly stored, well preserved, & suited to personal taste & memory.
-Satisfaction guaranteed of your money back within 30 days purchased within the USA.
-With a 1-3-day handling time to curate your order & using USPS Ground Advantage shipping as a standard shipping option (estimated by USPS within 2-5 business days); all US customers should anticipate a maximum of *10 days* to receive your order. Please be aware of these quirks prior to purchasing.

(COLLECTOR 1 ON 1 - FINAL THOUGHTS)

This discontinued early 1980's first formula just keeps getting more rare as we now move farther into the 2020's & into a generation of more severe IFRA regulations weakening the quality & strength of perfumery.

Mix that with the incredible 46 year maceration time, & it's virtually impossible to be able to replicate nor experience this perfectly aged juice again unless you want to wait until 2072.
Now dare I say this is one of a kind.

Just holding this observing it you can feel its vintage charm.
Bottle looks as if they just left the factory in 1980 so it is a time capsule from 46 years ago. Great collector's piece!

Over 4.5 decades of maceration, & pre-IFRA regulations on oakmoss with exceptional early 80's KL quality perfumery & you get a performance that resembles a modern EDP! Do not let the 'COLOGNE' name fool you.

Invest in a vintage - it not only smells better, & has extended performance, but even the BOTTLE lasts you longer. Ask yourself if spending less money on diluted formulas is actually saving you money & ask yourself if the quality is WORTH the $. That means overall less sprays - & less use out of this HUGE & precious 120 ml. / 4 fl. oz. bottle. There is far more life in this bottle than meets the eye. Possibly could last you a lifetime if only used on dates & special occasions.

Literally 2-3 sprays & you're good.

I cannot emphasize how rare this juice is now & will be even more so in the future.

Decent price for a collector wanting to reunite with &/or try this iconic original well preserved first formula from the house of KARL LAGERFELD

Mailing details:
Packages purchased within the USA will be shipped FREE USPS MAIL.
Tracking & 'Signature required' deliveries included in US orders at no extra cost.
(International packages are offered an auto-calculated shipping cost at checkout & will be shipped USPS Priority mail international).

International pricing disclaimer;

Unfortunately, I WILL NOT 'lower the cost' of the order to accommodate the extra expenses that come with the luxury of international shopping outside the USA.

Due to the luxury tier consensual nature of my inventory;

International shipping, import duties, taxes, and other misc. international charges are the international buyer’s responsibility. These are all additional charges that come with all international sales that I do not personally collect on.

Priority Mail International is the GOLD STANDARD & will be the only shipping used at my shop due speedy travel, frequent tracking scans, & its reliable delivery. Zero lost international packages to date. This service is the fastest, & the most reliable global shipping service from my postal carrier including constant tracking scans and delivery in as little as 3 weeks. There is a drastic difference and you are getting what you pay for with this pricier international shipping. If international shipping is not pricier in nature on high ticket items - then that's when you should be concerned.

By purchasing with me internationally you also acknowledge that me offering international shipment on expensive, fragile, irreplaceable, & hazardous alcohol based perfumery items is a risk and challenge I happily chose to take on to reach a global audience. This decision alone on my part is already quite generous - The vast majority of perfumery shops decline to invest into that extra difficulty.

Despite how expensive my listings may seem on top of international charges; my listings prices are studied and fairly priced for their exact selling value prior to listing. I sell for that exact sell value and don’t inflate it for room to negotiate.

Please read this disclaimer, and personally weigh out the pro’s and con’s of an international shipment with me instead of expecting me to lower the fee’s for you.

WHY YOU SHOULD PURCHASE THROUGH GUARDIAN OF THE FRAGRANCES & NOT OTHER VENDORS

 Gold standard service

Highly praised vintage fragrance vendor & longtime eBay member since 2004! Over 20 years of reliable gold standard service with satisfied customers leaving literal paragraphs on their positive feedback ratings. Your positive experience with me comes before the profit I make in my shop - & my enthusiastic service & money back guarantee surely reflects that. There's a deep sense of accomplishment that comes with being of purpose for your community. Allow me the opportunity to provide this to you & be your lifelong fragrance vendor.

 FREE extra goodies with purchase

Other sellers send you the item you paid for with a sad invoice slip - feels so cold & impersonal. I go beyond that with sending you a goodie bag with purchase to make your fragrance investment more worthwhile. YOU even chose the free gift! A hand written thank you note for supporting my shop included. All items in my shop are accurately & fairly priced to reflect the value of the vintage fragrance. Special goodie bag/bonus gift are never factored into the pricing. It's truly a thank you gift.

 One-category shop

I’m not selling a mess of random various thrift items that I know nothing about. At Guardianofthefragrances; you are shopping at a niche market that specializes solely on discontinued perfumery formulations. ‘One category shops’ like mine provide customers with a unique shopping experience that is backed with knowledge & experience within that category as well as shows I have a deep passion in what I am selling. Buying from fine-tuned one category shops like mine makes all the difference in a rewarding shopping experience. That seller who has listed some sneakers, baseball cards, hoodies, & that cologne you want - he may know its authentic & well preserved, OR he may not.

 Counterfeit Investigation process

With over a decade of professional Revenue Protection expertise investigating fraud & theft for my state of WI utility provider; all vintage fragrances in my shop are expertly ran through a process of deep research which involves but is not limited to; batch runs, bottle dating, differentiating formula differences, production quirk studies, bottle & cap weighing, taking atomizer off to investigate inner hardware, fragrance strength & quality testing - how long it lasts on skin and the quality of that experience, ect. Anything that falls into my hands that doesn't pass this process never reaches my shop.

 Quality appraisal process

I am college board certified in the state of WI in Sales & Design with over 20+ years of professional practice in appraising personal property & merchandise. At guardianofthefragrances; rest assured I am expertly skilled in determining whether your vintage formula has been well preserved by previous handlers. I find the counterfeit investigation process & quality appraisal the most 2 important things in my shop to gain customer trust & I am on a mission to not let you down.

 Mutual perfumery hobbyist & collector

Most importantly, I myself am a vintage fragrance hobbyist & collector. In fact, many listings come from my own personal collection after years of collecting back-up bottles as a hobby. As a hobbyist myself, I know exactly what my shoppers are looking for & what is sorely lacking in this sector. Studying & shopping for rare fragrances for my own collection has taught me the majority of the population are NOT experts in fragrances. Its a language many don't speak like ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics. In fact; the fragrance industry is the only billion dollar industry where the customer knows the least about what they are buying. Just that it 'smells good'. You even go on a forum discussion with hobbyist's & there's more questions than answers. This phenomenon is truly astonishing to me - as I am a personality type that demands answers. At guardianofthefragrances - I have those answers for you. It’s a passion of mine to go above and beyond the ‘indifferent’ lazy fragrance knowledge on vlogger videos & forums to give you real common-sense truths that Designer houses & retails hold back from us. In fact it was poor aloof information provided to the public about fragrances that gave me the drive to launch my business in the first place.

Why spend SO much on a vintage fragrance that isn't 'NEW' & 'FRESH'?
(I know you are asking yourself this if you are new to all this).

DESIGNER BRANDS PLAY 'DILLUTION GAMES' & RE-DISTRIBUTE THEIR BEST INGREDIENTS
IFRA regulation reformulations aside,
Greedy designer sales tactics are also to blame for disappointing modern fragrances.
To manipulate fragrance sales - classics are also purposely reformulated to discourage you from purchasing the old versions and to buy their potent flankers. Expensive/ natural/ better quality ingredients are re-distributed and resourced elsewhere.
The classic Acqua Di Gio is a perfect example of this - to discontinue this classic would be blasphemy so instead they made it cheap resembling the performance of an Eau de cologne when is USED to perform like a modern Eau De parfum.
Even if fragrances are NOT discontinued - the OLDER- the BETTER.
✅ONLY THE ORIGINAL FORMULAS UNLOCK YOUR NOSTALGIA & MEMORIES
Every single ingredient in a fragrance participates in a fragrances olfactory fingerprint.
The brain is so intelligently designed - that it stores a fragrance DNA's composition precisely to the very last ingredient used at that time. Try to smell a modern formula and see what happens - it's almost as if your brain gets confused, offended, and low key upset that your logical common sense cannot rationalize.
Only that special formula composed 10-20-30-40 years ago is the key to unlock vivid feelings of nostalgia.
BETTER QUALITY, INGREDIENTS, PERFORMANCE, & ARTISTRY
Made in times prior to cancel culture regulations, production politics, corporate greed, & making man made chemicals for profit; you get the authentic formula(s) the perfumery artist(s) intended from that time resulting in more naturals, less synthetic/cheap aroma chemical alternatives, richer compositions, bolder presence, more layers/less linear, and made in times where smoking was indoors- you get NUCLEAR performance.
SMELL BETTER AND OR HIGHER QUALITY THEN OTHER MEN AROUND YOU.
In a mass society unaware of vintage fragrances - you will absolutely without a doubt outshine whatever the common public is wearing. Gain respect, stand out, be the most attractive smelling in the room. In general this is what makes the male gender so enthralled with colognes but vintage amplifies this to the next level. Stop endless YouTube searches seeing if something modern performs - just buy vintage.
INVEST MORE IN VINTAGE TO SPEND LESS OVER TIME ON MODERN
Vintage fragrances are stronger and need less sprays due to concentration; 72% vol of alcohol (28% oils) in 1995 vs. 88% vol of alcohol (12% oils) in 2023. It's not a coincidence they are removing vol %'s on colognes nowadays - they don't want us to know how weakened they are. Many collectors go niche and get into strange off-putting DNAs not realizing they can simply go designer vintage having a mass pleasing scent that performs like a dream.  Beautiful mass pleasing DNA's in the best quality and strength possible.
The best way to go forward in perfumery is to go backwards.
If you buy a vintage- You will realize a bottle that would have lasted you a year is now lasting you over 2+ years. Think about it- you are going from essentially a modern day 'body spray' (Modern edt) to a powerful parfum strength niche like juice. Once you go vintage it's illogical to go back.
VINTAGE FRAGRANCES NEVER LOSE THEIR VALUE & *INCREASE* OVER TIME.
Because of the mass, devoted, & awakening population of the vintage fragrance community; vintage fragrances are a collectible commodity matching similar value in precious paintings, antiques, jewelry, gemstones, diamonds, and gold! Unlike most things you 'drive' off the lot; this fragrance will likely be MORE in 2-5-10-15 years. This is my favorite part about being a collector; my purchase investments lack buyers remorse on as I am buying an investment for the future/ and or discreet savings to liquidate as needed. It's as easy to trade fragrances for cash as it is to liquidate your cash for gold.

(Reformulation talk...)

Unfortunately,

In a modern era's effort to make the small allergen pool of the population safe for the bigger masses
(essentially a 'Safe than sorry' approach for everyone);
Harsh fragrance regulations came into effect within the last 20 years in the EU (United Nations) where nearly all fragrances are still composed.

The SCCS (Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety), IFRA (International Fragrance Association) & the ECHA (European Chemicals Agency) banded together to axe many precious naturals, and unique aroma chemicals in perfumery that have irritants to a small pool of the population.

To this day every year it seems another ingredient is banned as these chemical giants are auditing Chemistry materials on what seems like an unnecessary 'Woke movement' cancel parade. To play nice and to still get credibility for selling 'Safe' fragrances; all Designer perfumery houses have played with these giants to get full EU support of their product(s).

Between 2010-2022;
The EU has now banned over 2,000 chemicals in the body, skin, hair, & fragrance industry.
This massive chemical ban in body products is more than any other world region in history!
In comparison, the United States has banned only 17 ingredients from body products made in the USA.
Unfortunately for fragrance enthusiasts, a VERY small percentage of designers make their fragrances in America.
By 2030; the EEB (European Environmental Bureau) anticipates over 5,000-7,000 ingredients to be banned in total.

Rules, reformulations, synthetic ingredients, cost-cutting, & keeping up with modern scent trends have altered, & reduced the performance of many popular favorites from the past.
This is not a theory or paranoia, this is becoming more evident & informative in the fragrance community since the rise of fragrance communities and fragrance Vloggers.
Since this rise; vintage formulas are hunted and highly sought after by hobby-ists.

Many are so used to newer compositions they have no idea what they are missing.
vintage EDT formulas are well known to perform more like intense concentrated essential oil strength NICHE EDP's.
Newer formulations of the modern age are said to perform like a end body spray with average performance but no character development.

DET Vs. DPG:
A chemist in Germany did a gas chromatogram composition breakdown on a vintage & modern day version.
It was found that companies used to use a solvent Diethyl Phthalate (DET) on vintage versions which was known to have a stronger bonding fixative effect on the skin. Modern day fragrances are replaced with Dipropylene Glycol (DPG).
DPG is commonly used in lightly fragrance'd shampoos and DET is in home candles. Candle companies don't use DPG as the fragrance would immediately leave the base.
Makes you think.

The death of Oakmoss:

By far one of the most controversial and damaging IFRA regulations was the ban/limitations in natural Oakmoss. This popular ingredient is in near every legendary cologne; Davidoff Cool Water (Also reformulated), Aqua Di Gio (Also reformulated) Versace Eros (Also reformulated). Many are filled with weaker synthetics. Since Oakmoss rests in the base and has fixative effects fragrances also don't perform as well without it.

2022 Lilial ban:

And if you thought your top / mid notes were safe. You're wrong. In 2021 The Scientific committee on consumer safety (SCCS) & the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) banned the note of lilial due to its reaction to sensitive skin (That's it?).

They simply stated "It can sometimes act as an allergen." SOMETIMES?

Lilial was a common note in modern perfumery. Lilial being a synthetic aromatic soapy aldehyde;  it gave the self titled signature Versace Pour Homme it's sweet yet refreshing intense floral green odor.

I don't understand this obsession with making sure the skin doesn't react to materials. Practically every face mask on the market 'Reacts' to your skin and in the long run - improves it's appearance.

Doesn't skin strength train like muscles do?

Fragrance shelf life scam:

Reformulations are one thing, it's something that just can't be avoided.

One of the biggest gaslighting scams on the otherhand that can easily be avoided is the myth fragrances naturally 'Expire/go bad' due to time alone.

Fragrances are not your local produce guys, they are a balanced chemist composition of naturals and fragrant chemical aromas full of preservatives.

If that alone wasn't enough; that recipe is then preserved in a percentage average of 80% ALCOHOL. resulting in 'maybe' 10% natural ingredients to think 10% natural ingredients are up against and a threat against 90% chemical aromas, preservatives, and alcohol is a HUGE stretch.

Alcohol based fragrances should be compared to 50-100 year old bottles of preserved and cherished wine. Like wine, fragrances in fact get better with age from the process of maceration; when naturals soak in chemicals for extended periods of time making the juice richer and full of character. Fragrances are not fresh hand made cosmetics with no preservatives - quite the opposite.

Fragrances were even recovered from the 1912 Titanic wreck with no sign of expiring.

A perfumer perished in the wreck resulting in a sachet left behind on the BOTTOM of the ocean for over 100 years.

This sachet contained mini corked bottles of fragrant oils and perfumery. In an artifact examination room upon recovery, amongst the death, muck, tragedy, and solemn sorrow of decomposing materials the perfumery was opened up and by surprise brought the room to LIFE again, aromas of beautiful fruits, florals, resins, and woods sourced from so long ago.

The experience was so powerful to the scientist- it made a grown man cry.

Fragrances can be mishandled, left in sunlight, heat, and other neglectful extremes...but most certainly don't go bad from just the passing of time.

I guess any myth works for these fragrance industries that want you coming in to buy their 'fresh' bottles.

The modern day scent:

I say all that to say; modern day fragrances as a whole - are complete and utter trash...

whether that be a brand new composed scent or a reformulation of a classic.

The modern recipe:

Fake citrusy candy-like tops to lock you in, aromatic-mids to give you masculinity and bare minimal classic nostalgia, then a base gob-smacked with scratchy ambroxan / synthetic molecules completed with nauseating sweetness to ultimately gaslight you so don't notice how 'fake' the entire composition smells.

It's truly depressing what they release nowadays.

You might as well wear your household cleaner.
